Ok.....it's rush hour and you are racing to work, your car has broken down and for your sins you have to commute to work on the metro system. So far, so bad.....what if to make it even worse when you arrive at the station someone has stolen the map for the train network?! Its pretty safe to say your going to either end up lost, late or a nice mixture of the two........
When a search engine is looking at your site it will rely on a map very similar to the map in the example above, and to correctly negotiate your website this map must be clear and up to date with all of the information pertaining to your website. This map is referred to as your 'site map'. All websites will have their own sitemap and it is up to the owner of the website to properly maintain it. This is done by regularly updating the site map with any recent changes to the running of the website or a change in the structure of the pages of the website. An incorrect or poorly maintained sitemap may slow down the efforts of a search engine considerably and may therefore affect the inflow of potential traffic to your site.
Here at Peters Web we are more than happy to aid you with tips on how to properly maintain your own sitemap and to answer any further questions you may have!
