Here at Petersweb, we strongly recommend that you carry out a virus scan regularly when hosting your own website. As part of our service, we conduct a scan of our own systems on a nightly basis. We do this on behalf of our clients to ensure that no threats get passed on to our customer base. As with all online threats, although we do our best to prevent any malicious traffic reaching our clients, there’s always a chance that problems can be transmitted from other online sources. Fortunately, carrying out a virus scan is very easy and can be carried out via cPanel, simply follow the steps below: –
- Login to cPanel
- Select ‘Virus Scanner’ from the advanced menu
- Select the scan that you wish to run
As this is a relatively quick process, its worth carrying out the scan as often as possible to be on the safe side. As a quick side note, it is worth pointing out that a virus scan can sometimes produce a false result. An example of this would be that a spam email may flag up as a malicious entity. In this instance you may be instructed to ‘delete your mailbox’ due to this perceived ‘threat’. Of course a spam email isn’t usually a security threat and the action that should be taken in this case, would be to delete any spam emails, rather than the inbox itself (see our article ‘Enabling Apache SpamAssassin‘).
